Radioactive Iodine from Fukushima Found in California Kelp

LONG BEACH, Calif. ? Kelp off Southern California was contaminated with short-lived radioisotopes a month after Japan?s Fukushima accident, a sign that the spilled radiation reached the state?s urban coastline, according to a new scientific study.
Scientists from California State University, Long Beach tested giant kelp collected in the ocean off Orange County and other locations after the March, 2011 accident, and detected radioactive iodine, which was released from the damaged nuclear reactor.
The largest concentration was about 250-fold higher than levels found in kelp before the accident.
?Basically we saw it in all the California kelp blades we sampled,? said Steven Manley, a Cal State Long Beach biology professor who specializes in kelp.
The radioactivity had no known effects on the giant kelp, or on fish and other marine life, and it was undetectable a month later.
Iodine 131 ?has an eight-day half life so it?s pretty much all gone,? Manley said. ?But this shows what happens half a world away does effect what happens here. I don?t think these levels are harmful but it?s better if we don?t have it at all.?
A year ago, Manley watched coverage of the tsunami and Fukushima accident and wondered what impact it might have on California?s marine life, particularly his favorite subject matter ? kelp.
Spread in large, dense, brown forests across the ocean off California, Macrocystis pyrifera, known as giant kelp, is the largest of all algae and grows faster than virtually any other life on Earth. It accumulates iodine so Manley realized it would be a useful dosimeter to check how far radioactive material spreads.
??Kelp forests are some of the most productive ecosystems on Earth,? he said. ?I thought this would be an opportunity because one thing about macrocystis is it has a large surface canopy,? which means it is continually exposed to the air ? and whatever contaminants are in it.
In addition, giant kelp concentrates radioactive iodine 10,000-fold ? for every one molecule in the water there would be 10,000 in its tissues.
Kelp was collected at three sites off Orange County, as well as Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, Santa Barbara, Pacific Grove and Santa Cruz. The highest concentration of iodine 131 was found in the kelp off Corona del Mar, which receives runoff from a large portion of Orange County. Its kelp was collected on April 15 of last year and tested five days later.
The level of radioactive iodine found there ? 2.5 becquerel per gram of dry weight -- was ?well above? levels sampled in kelps prior to the Fukushima release, according to the paper, published online earlier this month in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.
It was about 250 times higher than the concentration found in giant kelp off British Columbia before Fukushima.
When kelp from the same California sites was re-sampled a month later, in May of 2011, it contained no detectable amounts of radioactive iodine.
The scientists estimated that the entire kelp tissue on the surface at Corona del Mar contained about one millicurie.
?In terms of overall exposure to the kelp bed itself, it?s not a huge amount,? said Manley.
It would not have harmed the kelp, a species that grows from northern Baja to southeast Alaska, he said.
Some radioactive material probably accumulated in fish that eat the kelp ? opaleye, halfmoon and senorita.
?If they were feeding on it, they definitely got dosed. We just don?t know if it was harmful. It?s probably not good for them. But no one knows,? Manley said. ?In the marine environment it was significant, but probably not harmful at the levels we detected it, except it may have affected certain fish?s thyroid systems, the ones that fed on the kelp.?

Must I Continue Working With A Broker After They ... - Realtor.com
Q: I found a property I wanted to see and contacted the real estate agent who went with me to see the property. I made an offer. The agent had me sign the offer document and I waited. After there apparently was no response from the listing agent. The broker told me to approach the owner myself to ask if my offer had been accepted because she would be risking her license. Luckily for me no one answered. Then the next day, I was told my offer was accepted. The broker then requested I submit, she claims bank statements and gift letters to prove the availiability of funds for the closing. Then three days later after a few telephone conversations and text messages, I was told that the sale was a short sale. I have legal representation but can I fire her and ask another broker to represent me or can I only use my real estate attorney to handle everything.

A: This is a pretty complicated situation, with several holes, ergo it will be difficult to pinpoint the crux of this deal. I?m not sure when you say ?the agent? if that is the seller?s agent or, your buyer?s agent? Were you pre-qualified? was there earnest money involved? You should have been told at the very first conversation of substance that the home had the potential to be a short sale, but that is water under the bridge now.
If there is signed paperwork I would advise you to read it over carefully before firing anyone. If you default on the agreed upon terms you could loose your earnest money. It is unfortunate that you did not have all the information at hand to make an informed decision before putting in the offer, however your lack of understanding does not invalidate the contract. Hopefully your RE Attorney can untangle this mess for you, looking out for your best interests, and get you back on the path towards home ownership!

Chemical microgradients accelerate coral death at the Great Barrier Reef

Researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology along with Australian colleagues, have examined corals from the Great Barrier Reef affected by the Black Band Disease and identified the critical parameters that allow this prevalent disease to cause wide mortality of corals around the world. Corals infected with Black Band show a characteristic appearance of healthy tissue displaced by a dark front, the so called Black Band, which leaves the white limestone skeleton of the coral animal exposed. The dark front is commonly one to two centimetres broad and consists of a complex microbial community among which there are phototrophic cyanobacteria, sulfur oxidizing bacteria and sulfate reducing microorganisms. The corals and their endosymbiotic algae are struck by three stress factors at once: toxic sulfide, anoxia, and a low pH at the boundary of the bacterial mat and the coral tissue.
The scientists investigated the tissue lesions with microsensors for oxygen, sulfide and pH. These microprobes have a tip diameter in the micrometre range and allow the scientists to measure highly resolved depth profiles in the coral tissue. They identified big differences between infected tissue and tissue in the preliminary stage of the disease: "In diseased coral tissue two zones develop: A phototrophic zone at the top in which the cyanobacteria produce oxygen and a lower anoxic zone in which the bacteria degrade the necrotic coral tissue. Sulfide is formed in the degradation process", Martin Glas of the Max Planck Institute in Bremen explains the results. "In tissue that is only slightly infected the zonation is not nearly that strong. Usually we could not detect sulfide, and oxygen penetrated deep into the bacterial mat."
At the front of the dark zone the conditions are particularly detrimental for the corals. The increased sulfide concentration around the necrosing tissue and the resulting decrease in oxygen leads to the spreading of the lesions to the surrounding, healthy tissue; a positive feedback that causes rapid migration of the Black Band Disease.
"We assume that the biogeochemical conditions at the surface of the coral tissue are responsible for the fast spreading of the disease. The higher the sulfide concentrations are and the less oxygen there is, the faster the dark front is migrating", Martin Glas describes the causes for the origin and the high virulence of the disease. So far, at least, the scientists have not identified a pathogen that could be responsible for the necrosis of the coral tissue. "Our measurements show that the Black Band Disease can migrate at one centimetre per day in the summer months. At this speed, within a very short time, whole coral colonies can die and the population size of many coral species on the reef can number of species in the reef can drastically decline", says Martin Glas.
For several years, David Bourne of the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville and his colleague Yui Sato have been performing monitoring programs on the condition of coral reefs in which they also examined the coral diseases in the Great Barrier Reef. David Bourne says: ?Presumably the Black Band Disease is one of the most frequently reported diseases in tropical reefs. One major cause is the seasonally high water temperature. Thus, results from this study allow us to understand at the micro-scale how the environmental conditions and the complex microbial community interact to result in the onset and progression of this coral disease."
Is there any cure for the reefs? "If the temperature decreases in winter the disease is stagnant. However, with increasing frequency the disease recurs in the next year. The bare coral skeleton can be overgrown by new polyps. But this may take many years", as Yui Sato of the James Cook University states.

No. 1 Stanford women beat Duke to reach Final Four
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? When fall practice began, Tara VanDerveer had no idea if her young team would get back to a fifth straight Final Four.
One thing she did know: Nnemkadi Ogwumike would do all in her power to get Stanford to Denver.
Ogwumike and Co. would like nothing more than to haul a championship trophy home from the Mile High City.
She made it happen on both ends of the floor with 29 points and nine rebounds Monday night despite constant double-teams, sending top-seeded Stanford past No. 2 seed Duke 81-69 in the Fresno Regional final for the Cardinal's fifth straight Final Four berth.
"I'm really proud of our team. If you asked me in the beginning of the season is this a Final Four team, I don't know if I could answer yes," VanDerveer said. "Nneka, she has put our team on her back almost all year. If it hasn't been Nneka it's been Chiney."
Little sister, Chiney, did plenty to seal this one, too ? along with everybody else. Chiney Ogwumike grabbed 17 rebounds to go with 12 points and freshman Amber Orrange came through with 13 points and four assists as the Cardinal extended their school-record winning streak to 32 games.
"I told myself going into the game I was going to get every rebound," Chiney Ogwumike said.
She'll have to do that and then some in her next game.
Bring on Brittney Griner and unbeaten Baylor (38-0). Stanford is likely to pull in 6-foot-5 male practice player Andrew Klein to play the part of the 6-8 Griner in practice as the Cardinal did last year while preparing for a possible matchup with Baylor.
Stanford (35-1), looking for the program's first national title since 1992, will play Sunday night against the Lady Bears at the Pepsi Center.
"We don't get the chance often to be an underdog and totally overlooked," Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer said.
Chelsea Gray had 23 points, four rebounds and four assists and Shay Selby scored 11 in her final college game for Duke (27-6), which fell short of reaching the program's first Final Four since 2006. The Blue Devils never got clicking on offense the way they had in their three NCAA wins.
"It was a good run," SeIby said. "I think this one probably hurt the most. When you're a sophomore or junior, it's, 'Oh, you have next year.' I have no next year. Hopefully I can say I left something with them that will help them for next year."
The projected No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, Nneka Ogwumike scored in the paint, on the perimeter, on leaping putbacks and even by knocking down a pretty 10-foot turnaround jumper late in the first half as the Cardinal built a comfortable 40-25 lead at the break.
"It was unfortunate for us. We tried to defend the inside and the outside. They hit some nice shots," Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said.
Stanford boasted a strong rooting section that made the three-hour trip from the Bay Area to the Save Mart Center, including Cardinal football coach David Shaw and his wife, Kori. The couple sat alongside former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
In a matchup dubbed "nerd on nerd" by Chiney Ogwumike for the schools' rigorous academic standards, Stanford's smart girls aced their latest final. But this group has its sights set on winning two more to make good on the most important test and give Hall of Fame 26th-year coach VanDerveer another long-awaited championship.
"This started before I even came to Stanford. I always wanted to be part of the culture," she said. "This never gets old. Not a lot of teams get to say that they've gone. For me to get to say I've been on four times, that's a lot to ask for."
Just as she has wanted all season during a challenging schedule featuring games with Connecticut, Tennessee, Texas and Xavier, VanDerveer got contributions from most everybody in a balanced effort.
Joslyn Tinkle knocked down two 3-pointers in the opening five minutes and also made an early steal, then hit another 3 with 4:26 left that put Stanford ahead by 13. She finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
On Saturday, Nneka Ogwumike almost single-handedly carried the load, scoring 39 points in a 76-60 regional semifinal win over South Carolina. Her total Monday gave Ogwumike 787 points, tying Candice Wiggins' single-season scoring record set in 2007-08 ? so Ogwumike will surely top that mark with at least one more game.
Gray, with another 50 or so family and friends cheering the guard who grew up about 75 miles north in Stockton, converted a three-point play with 10:46 remaining to pull Duke within 52-44, but the Cardinal answered yet again. Toni Kokenis rolled in a 3 on the other end.
The Blue Devils switched to a zone in the second half after that same move worked so well in a 74-47 rout of St. John's, but Orrange and Kokenis successfully drove and dished ? and they also handled Duke's trap press. Kokenis had eight of Stanford's 21 assists.
Elizabeth Williams, Duke's star 6-3 freshman playing with a stress fracture in her lower right leg, quickly scored to make it 48-39. She scored 12 points while playing much of the game in foul trouble.
Stanford got a scare with 6:51 left in the first half when Nneka Ogwumike scored on a drive to make it 30-16 and then turned into Kathleen Scheer's right elbow. She briefly went down and took a seat for all of 1:23.
Chiney Ogwumike is playing on a sprained right knee and wearing a bulky brace. Whatever it takes at this stage, with the stakes so high.
"We would love to hoist that trophy up a mile high," Chiney Ogwumike said. "Coach is like, 'anything's possible, you never know, don't count us out.'"

AP: Can?t an SMB customer get this same data and these same reports from Quickbooks or other accounting system?
MB: No, they cannot. Data such as lost business, pipeline size and trends, quotes and closure ratios, and many more data types are coming from the sales/marketing department and its CRM and proprietary systems. SalesScope integrates all this and finds relationships between different types of data from different places that before could not be correlated with each other.
AP: If you had to summarize the advantages an SMB would receive from using SaleScope what would they be?

MIAMI — The Steve Aoki Experience hit Ice Palace in downtown Miami a little after 3:30 a.m. in the early Saturday hours, and the Dim Mak chairman didn't disappoint. He powered through a set loaded with new music and the madness that fans have come to love from his live shows.
In the lead-up to his Ultra Music Festival show slated for Sunday (March 25), Aoki treated the Ice Palace crowd to champagne showers and shots of Grey Goose. He also brought along some very special friends: Datsik, who'll hit the road this summer on Dim Mak Records' Deadmeat Tour; and Alan Strovich, who recently finished a dramatic dubstep remix of "Ladi Dadi." (One of Aoki's biggest tracks, his 2011 "Ladi" features singer Wynter Gordon.)
Many of the tracks Aoki played on Saturday were from Dim Mak's Miami Winter Music Conference sampler, which dropped 10 days ago on Beatport. Those included the banging new gems "Dance" from Spencer & Hill and Dirtyloud; "Turn Up the Volume" with Joachim Garraud and Autoerotique; and Aoki's smash tag-team with Tiësto on "Tornado."
It was a crazy show to say the least. And with his date on the Main Stage at Ultra just hours away, it proved to be an exciting prelude to what we predict will be one of the most impressive stage dives at UMF.

This week we will be starting things off with a giant not just in the free-to-play world but also in the MMO universe. Every year contests are held around the world and are attended by teams of professional LoL players competing for huge sums of winnings ranging into the thousands.
?But what is it all about?? I hear you ask. LoL pits you and your team of Champions against other players or AI in a RTS battle to the death. CPS Energy first announced plans to buy the Rio Nogales plant on March 12. The generation from the 800 megawatt plant will replace the electricity output from CPS Energy?s oldest coal plant, the J.T. Deely facility, which will be decommissioned in 2018. Until then, CPS Energy will use some of Rio Nogales? output and sell the remainder of the power to third-party companies.
