Boxing: Khan signs up new coach for fight against Molina

Amir Khan brought some clarity to his future yesterday by announcing a new head trainer as well as his next opponent.

"Molina is a good fighter who has yet to taste defeat, so I know that he will be very dangerous," Khan said. "He's a tricky fighter who possesses a lot of natural speed. I always want to face hungry young fighters, and in Molina I am up against a guy who has ambitions of world title success."

Hunter was last year voted as the trainer of the year by America's boxing writers, and he believes the new partnership can be fruitful.

"Amir is an extremely talented fighter and I'm very happy to become his new trainer," he said.

"I've seen a lot of him and he has many attributes, such as his speed and heart. There are certain small aspects of his game that I'm intending to work on in order to help him fulfil his enormous potential."

Why shouldn?t Christians behave like happy sports fans?

t?s interesting that Christians tend to get categorized as either boring or extreme.

I was thinking about that and wondering why it?s okay for fans of the Whitecaps or Canucks to shout and dance after a victory, but for Christians to behave like that in church is considered weird or even fanatical.

Here are a couple of definitions I found of the word fan: an enthusiastic devotee; and an ardent admirer.

We?d think it a bit unusual if the Lions won the Grey Cup for the second year running and were celebrated just with some sincere, controlled applause.

We?d think it pretty strange if Angelina Jolie came to town and people expressed passive, polite interest. No autograph-seekers around; no ogling young men.

So here?s a thought. Canucks players come and go and the team wins and loses. Jolie will have blockbusters and flops and will, like the rest of us, get old.? And Christians say they are followers of Jesus Christ.

They say He saved them from hell and gave them purpose and meaning in life.

Now for a definition of hell: the nether realm of the devil and the demons in which the damned suffer everlasting punishment.

Christians say that this Jesus has changed their lives and given them hope and peace.

Now, if all this were true, wouldn?t you think it pretty strange if their ?fan behaviour? was passive, polite interest?

Or, at the most, reverent and restrained song and an occasional tapping foot?

If it is true that this One named Jesus is the only way to be saved (more definitions, this time for saved: to be delivered from sin; to be rescued or delivered from danger or harm; to be preserved or guarded from destruction) then wouldn?t it be a bit unusual if His fans didn?t enthusiastically tell others?

Wouldn?t you think that when all the fans of His gathered together it might be a bit enthusiastic?

I don?t know, but I?ve been thinking about these things and realized that if I had the option of being boring or passionate in this sense, I?d rather choose passionate every time.

Soapy 'Won't Back Down' gets a failing grade

The jury is still out on a solution to the national education system crisis, but the verdict is delivered with a heavy hand and a stacked deck in the formulaic "Won?t Back Down." Simplifying complex school-reform hurdles into tidy inspirational clich?s while demonizing both teachers? unions and bureaucracy-entrenched education boards, the movie addresses timely issues but eschews shading in favor of blunt black and white. It?s old-school Lifetime fodder dressed up in Hollywood trappings.

In the broadest terms, Daniel Barnz?s film, co-written with Brin Hill, is a dramatized counterpart to Davis Guggenheim?s 2010 documentary "Waiting for Superman,? which pointed to charter schools as the only way out of the public-education quagmire. That film was partly financed by Walden Media, the backers of this Fox release, suggesting that the problem of underperforming inner-city classrooms is a pet cause for the company.

In Barnz and Hill?s by-the-numbers screenplay -- which trumpets that vaguest of catch-all legitimization banners, ?Inspired by actual events? -- the catalyst for much-needed change at Adams Elementary School in Pittsburgh is crusading Everymom Jamie Fitzpatrick (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Her dyslexic daughter Malia (Emily Alyn Lind) is stuck in a class with a teacher (Nancy Bach) who is a monster of job-secure complacency, and a principal (Bill Nunn) too mired in unionized paralysis to help.

A single mother working two jobs and unable to afford tuition at better alternatives, Jamie bones up on the ?fail-safe? maneuver, the film?s equivalent of the parent trigger law. That controversial legislation -- on the books in some form in a handful of states and under consideration in many others -- allows concerned parents and teachers to intervene in floundering public schools. In the film?s example, it primarily means getting past restrictive union controls and a do-nothing education board.

The absurd idea that the parents of an entire student body are too apathetic to worry about their kids? education until Jamie comes along like some rocker-chick Erin Brockovich is just one of the film?s condescendingly movie-ish conceits. Played with grating one-note pluckiness by Gyllenhaal, Jamie overcompensates for her lack of a college education by self-consciously sprinkling her conversations with words like ?trepidatious.? Yet, darned if this scrappy dynamo doesn?t get the whole community galvanized.

Even more objectionable is the depiction of the burned-out staff at Adams. They mill around in the break room bitching about teachers like Malia?s, saying, ?The only thing the district does well is protect its mistakes.? But the general lack of motivation is palpable, and even Nona Alberts (Viola Davis), a committed educator like her mother before her, has lost faith in her profession.

The only exception at Adams appears to be Teach For America do-gooder and soulful hunk Michael Perry (Oscar Isaac), who leads his class in line-dancing numbers, accompanying them on ukulele as they sing about ?Goin? to College.? Naturally, this makes Jamie swoon.

A perfunctory romance blooms, but Michael vacillates in his support for Jamie?s cause. Preferring to focus his commitment on his class only, he is reluctant to stray from union-sanctioned guidelines. Jamie?s sole consistent ally is Nona, who risks alienating the entire teaching staff, including her feisty pal Breena (Rosie Perez). While she?s worn down by the challenges of a broken system, not to mention the end of her marriage and the learning difficulties of her own son (Dante Brown), Nona reluctantly gets with the empowerment program.

However, this is another one of those movies where a tenacious white person leads the charge to save inner-city kids, achieving a miracle transformation through sheer force of will. While Nona is the insider with the education experience, she?s second fiddle throughout the fight, getting much of her dignity not from the script but from Davis, who could do this role in her sleep.

In order to provide a gossamer-thin semblance of balance, Barnz and Hill plant one jaded idealist apiece in the teachers? union and the education board. That essentially leaves Holly Hunter and Marianne Jean-Baptiste playing variations on the same role, both of them primed for redemption as they rediscover their buried convictions. Elsewhere, the opposition is reduced -- most notably by Ned Eisenberg?s belligerently uncompromising union chief -- to a force of obstinate blindness as to what?s good for the kids, and for the majority of disillusioned teachers.

Given the disingenuous way in which this lumbering movie pushes obvious buttons and manipulates the audience?s emotional investment while conveniently skimming the issues, it?s a mystery how some of these names got roped in.

Following her breakout work in "The Help," this is a particularly unhappy use of Davis? considerable talents. Hunter also is too smart an actor to be stuck playing the transparent construct of a compromised Norma Rae. Lance Reddick (The Wire) is given an entirely thankless role as Nona?s businesslike departing husband, while Ving Rhames is on hand literally to deliver a speech as principal of the exemplary Rosa Parks Elementary School during a lottery draw for new students.

That scene is one of many such preachy interludes in a dumbed-down agenda film that veers shamelessly between didacticism and soap.

G4S backs CEO over Olympic fiasco

LONDON (Reuters) - Security firm G4S stood by its chief executive Nick Buckles and said two other senior executives would go following its probe into an embarrassing Olympic contract blunder.

The debacle began when the firm admitted just two weeks before the Olympics that it could not provide a promised 10,400 guards, forcing troops to step in and make up the shortfall.

The firm said its review did not uncover any "significant shortcomings" in the CEO's handling of the contract that has put its commercial relationship with the British government at risk.

Government deals account for over half of G4S's 1.8 billion pounds British revenue. The group, which operates in over 125 countries, is expected to achieve total revenue of 8 billion pounds this year.

There had been speculation Buckles would fall on his sword in an attempt to shore up the firm's damaged reputation in Britain but instead chief operating officer David Taylor-Smith and global events director Ian Horseman Sewell resigned.

"Whilst the CEO has ultimate responsibility for the company's performance, the review did not identify significant shortcomings in his performance or serious failings attributable to him in connection with the Olympic contract," G4S said.

The company was capable of fulfilling the contract, the review found, but did not sufficiently allow for the scale and complexity of the task.

Buckles, who has been with the world's biggest security group for 27 years, has been the face of the Olympic failure, taking to television and radio airwaves to apologise to the British public and twice being hauled in front of a Parliamentary Committee to explain what had happened.

But he has also presided over a 76 percent rise in his company's share price since being elevated to the CEO role in 2005, and now needs to persuade the government that G4S can be trusted with upcoming contracts managing British prisons and police outsourcing deals.

"Are we surprised that Buckles hasn't gone? Frankly yes. Does it draw a line under the whole affair? I don't think it does," said Seymour Pierce analyst Kevin Lapwood.

The company was awarded a small electronic tagging deal in Scotland last week, but the government may find it awkward to award large outsourcing deals to G4S so soon after a parliamentary committee rapped it on the knuckles.

"It's not closure. They must waive their fee and pay compensation," tweeted Keith Vaz, who chairs the Home Affairs Committee, on Friday.

The Home Affairs Committee has called for G4S to waive its 57 million pounds management fee for the contract, while the company reiterated on Friday that it expected to make a 50 million pound loss on the contract.

CONTRACT ISSUES

Taylor-Smith was responsible for ensuring the Olympics contract was delivered on budget and on time, while Sewell was the account director who told Reuters just before the Games that the company could have delivered two events of that scale at the same time.

The report found G4S did not track its workforce effectively and failed to realise the problem until too late.

"Our review of the company's performance on this contract has been extremely thorough and, whilst the failures are largely specific to the very special nature of this contract, we will learn from mistakes made," said Chairman John Connolly.

G4S said it would carry out more vigorous risk assessment in future, with greater board oversight of large contracts.

It also tasked Kim Challis with repairing relations with the government, creating a new role of CEO for UK government opportunities and outsourcing.

The group is the second largest private sector employer in the world, running operations from immigration and border control to guarding ships from pirates and cash transportation.

Auction of $7 Renoir canceled, may be stolen from Baltimore museum

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Virginia auction house on Thursday canceled the sale of a Renoir painting bought at a flea market for $7 after signs the work was stolen from the Baltimore Museum of Art decades ago.

The painting "Paysage Bords de Seine" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir was to have gone under the hammer on Saturday but ownership questions halted the sale, said Lucie Holland, a spokeswoman for Potomack Co, the Alexandria, Virginia, auctioneer.

"The rest of the auction will go on, but the Renoir has been withdrawn," she said.

A Virginia woman bought the signed French Impressionist painting at a West Virginia flea market a year or two ago, hoping the frame would be of some use.

She ignored the work until it turned up again while housecleaning and had it appraised by Potomack in July. The auctioneers verified it as a Renoir and estimated its worth at $75,000 to $100,000.

The Baltimore Museum of Art told Potomack on Wednesday that its records indicated "Paysage Bords de Seine," or "Landscape on the Banks of the Seine," was stolen while on loan to the museum in 1951, the auction house said.

Potomack told the FBI and a federal probe is under way. There is no known police report on the theft.

BOUGHT IN PARIS

The Renoir came to the Baltimore museum through one of its leading benefactors, collector Saidie May. Her family bought the painting from the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris in 1926.

The Washington Post found records in the museum's library on Tuesday that showed May had lent the paintings and other works to the museum in 1937, Potomack said.

After the newspaper told it of the findings, the Baltimore museum checked its files and found a loan record showing the Renoir had been stolen on November 17, 1951. What happened to it after the theft is unknown.

Doreen Bolger, the museum director, said the museum's probe into what happened to the painting was in early stages but was centered on May.

She died in May 1951 and the art collection was willed to the museum. As its ownership was going through legal transfer, the painting was stolen while still listed as on loan.

"At this point we just want to make sure that the painting winds up where it belongs and that we provide all the information we can to law enforcement about this issue," Bolger said.

Potomack said the painting had not turned up when it checked London's Art Loss Register, a database of stolen and lost art. It also consulted the FBI's art theft website to confirm it was not listed as stolen.

Winemaking is the latest industry to be hit by robot?fever: French inventors have created a robot that rolls among the grapevines, checking and perhaps pruning as it goes.

A wine grower in France complained three years ago to?Christophe Millot that they were always short on staff. Millot designed the Wall-Ye robot, which is indeed named after Pixar's trash-collecting WALL-E, and the pair have been working together on it ever since.

Wall-Ye moves around on treads and is equipped with a number of cameras for navigation and inspection of vines.?It navigates by GPS, but also recognizes each plant individually and can carry out?special instructions or follow up on previous work.

There are plans to make it able to prune vines and eventually pick grapes, but for now it is limited to less complicated tasks. But checking for bugs, disease, temperature variations and soil problems are important parts of running a vineyard ? and they can be tedious.

Another winemaker, Claire Gazeau-Montrasi, explains in the AFP video above?that she would welcome a robot that took care of the most boring jobs. Like a Roomba or similar household robot, it can do its job slowly but surely, working around its owner's schedule.

At ?25,000, or around $32,000, Wall-Ye isn't cheap, though there are larger and more expensive systems that are capable of more. Automation of agriculture hasn't made it to vineyards quite yet because of the delicate nature of the task, but that may soon change, with?robots like Wall-Ye leading the charge.

Tumor cell growth does not follow a master plan

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Scientists at Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin could explain a yet unknown regulatory network that controls the growth of tumor cells. Understanding such networks is an important task in molecular tumor biology in order to decode the relationships between the determinants defining which molecules are produced and in what quantities, in both normal and tumor cells.

The study is published in the journal Molecular Systems Biology.

The growth of a tumor and its reaction to specifically targeted therapy is dictated by changes in its genetic material (mutations) encoding special signal molecules. These molecules activate the genetic program of tumor cells via branched signaling pathways and influence all processes needed for cell division, the mobility of cells and metastasis. Significant steering elements of these tumor-specific programs are called transcription factors. These are molecules that selectively control the transcription of the cell's genetic information (DNA) into messenger RNA and enable production of proteins . Altogether a complex network of mutually regulating transcription factors is activated.

Whereas the signal network in human tumors has already been characterized very well, it is hardly understood how transcription factors cooperate and regulate each other. In order to explain this transcription factor network, the scientists used a systems biology approach. A complex experimental data set -- in which the transcription factors in tumor cells were systematically disrupted -- was analyzed with the help of mathematical modeling. As a result, interactions within the network could be reconstructed and the network controlling tumor growth clarified.

"Contrary to a current assumption, the results show that no superordinate transcription factor exists that controls the activity of other factors as a master regulator," explains Prof. Reinhold Sch?fer, head of the Laboratory for Molecular Tumor Pathology and deputy director of the Charit? Comprehensive Cancer Center. Instead, two hierarchical groups of interacting factors exist. Each of them activates gene sets needed for growth and cancer-specific properties of the cells. The results indicate that new therapeutic approaches against tumors must target multiple rather than singular factors and consider the network structures.

What Causes Ocean "Dead Zones"?

So-called dead zones are areas of large bodies of water?typically in the ocean but also occasionally in lakes and even rivers?that do not have enough oxygen to support marine life. The cause of such ?hypoxic? (lacking oxygen) conditions is usually eutrophication, an increase in chemical nutrients in the water, leading to excessive blooms of algae that deplete underwater oxygen levels. Nitrogen and phosphorous from agricultural runoff are the primary culprits, but sewage, vehicular and industrial emissions and even natural factors also play a role in the development of dead zones.

Dead zones occur around the world, but primarily near areas where heavy agricultural and industrial activity spill nutrients into the water and compromise its quality accordingly. Some dead zones do occur naturally, but the prevalence of them since the 1970s?when dead zones were detected in Chesapeake Bay off Maryland as well as in Scandinavia?s Kattegat Strait, the mouth of the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the northern Adriatic?hints at mankind?s impact. A 2008 study found more than 400 dead zones worldwide, including in South America, China, Japan, southeast Australia and elsewhere.

Perhaps the most infamous U.S. dead zone is an 8,500 square mile swath (about the size of New Jersey) of the Gulf of Mexico, not far from where the nutrient-laden Mississippi River, which drains farms up and down the Midwest, lets out. Besides decimating the region?s once teeming shrimp industry, low oxygen levels in the water there have led to reproductive problems for fish, leading to lack of spawning and low egg counts. Other notable U.S. dead zones today occur off the coasts of Oregon and Virginia.

Fortunately, dead zones are reversible if their causes are reduced or eliminated. For example, a huge dead zone in the Black Sea largely disappeared in the 1990s following the fall of the Soviet Union, after which there was a huge spike in the cost of chemical fertilizers throughout the region. And while this situation was largely unintentional, the lessons learned have not been lost on scientists, policymakers and the United Nations, which has been pushing to reduce industrial emissions in other areas around the globe where dead zones are a problem. To wit, efforts by countries along the Rhine River to reduce sewage and industrial emissions have reduced nitrogen levels in the North Sea?s dead zone by upwards of 35 percent.

In the U.S., dead zones have also been reduced in the Hudson River and San Francisco Bay following clean-up efforts. Hypoxic conditions continue to plague the Gulf of Mexico, however, with matters made worse by pollution unleashed by Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill, as well as by a federal push to increase Midwest corn production, which effectively loads even more algae-inducing nutrients into the already overloaded system. The Mississippi Basin/Gulf of Mexico Water Nutrient Task Force, a coalition of federal, state and tribal agencies, has been busy monitoring the dead zone and recommending ways to reduce it since its formation in 1997. But with industrial and agricultural activity throughout Gulf and Midwestern states only increasing?and Mother Nature not making the job any easier?the task force has an uphill battle on its hands to say the least.

I can?t claim to be much of a sports fan.

But I do enjoy reading about interesting personalities, and participating in an organized sport is one way to express your uniqueness. Maybe it?s the pressure of competition that brings interesting qualities to the fore. And for some reason, the sporting world attracts individuals with remarkable names. Especially baseball, where fan and jazz pianist Dave Frishberg was inspired to set to music this list of compelling monikers.

This comes up because I noticed today marks the birthdays of some sports figures from the past who had outstanding names -

All of Lottie Dod?s wins at Wimbledon came against the same player ? the imposingly named Blanche Bingley Hillyard.

As an amateur sing-song poet and shameless creator of too many stupid little rhymes, I find this pair irresistible. And of course one of them has a perfect name for this justifiably unappreciated form.

Manning comes up short, Texans beat Broncos 31-25

DENVER (AP) ? Fall behind by 20. Mount a furious comeback. Lose by six.

The ugly interceptions didn't play into Peyton Manning's second straight defeat, but so much of the rest of it sounded like a broken record ? the likes of which the Broncos quarterback doesn't want to hear anymore.

Matt Schaub lost a small chunk of his ear after a brutal hit, but still outplayed Manning, throwing for four touchdowns against a confused Broncos defense Sunday to stake the Houston Texans to a big lead on the way to a 31-25 victory.

"We have to learn from this game, address it, be honest, everybody needs to be accountable and try to improve forward," Manning said. "It's not the ideal situation. Everybody would love to be 3-0. That's not the way it is right now."

It is for Houston, which won its first three games for the first time in the franchise's 11-season history and beat Manning for only the third time in 19 tries ? and for the first time ever in a road game.

Manning finished 26 for 52 for 330 yards with no interceptions and two touchdowns. This was his 64th career 300-yard passing game, breaking a tie for the record with Dan Marino. But both of Manning's touchdown passes and 120 of his yards came after the Broncos (1-2) had fallen behind by 20, the way they did in Atlanta last Monday when their rally came up short in a 27-21 loss.

"It's hard to think about anything, really, besides losing two games in a row in a tough fashion," Manning said.

In the Atlanta game, the Denver defense couldn't get the ball back for Manning at the end. This time, it did, but the drive started at the Denver 14-yard line with 20 seconds left and ended with a lost fumble after Broncos receivers tried lateraling at midfield on the last play.

Manning threw three interceptions in the first quarter of the Atlanta game to match his worst quarter in 15 years in the NFL. This time, it was the defense's mistakes, not his own, that put him in the hole.

"Second week in a row we lost by six points," Denver coach John Fox said. "It's the second week in a row we started very slowly. Different side of the ball this time."

Schaub threw for 290 yards. He took advantage of blown coverages to connect with Andre Johnson for a 60-yard score and Kevin Walter for a 52-yard touchdown en route to a 21-5 lead in the second quarter.

After the second score, starting cornerback Tracy Porter was not seen on the field again.

Porter, who returned an interception for a touchdown in Denver's only win this year ? the season opener against Pittsburgh ? spent the rest of the game guarding the Gatorade table on the sideline. Fox said he had a knee injury. Porter's clothes were still hanging in his locker when reporters were asked to leave the locker room.

"We knew that we had to try to get the ball downfield because they had a lot of people committed to the run," said Texans coach Gary Kubiak, the longtime Denver quarterback and assistant coach, who got his 50th career win. "We did what we had to do to win, convinced them that we had to make some big plays and they did."

Schaub's final touchdown was a 14-yard pass to tight end Owen Daniels, who was locked in one-on-one coverage against a slower defender, linebacker Von Miller. It gave the Texans a 31-11 lead with 1:33 left in the third quarter ? placing the Houston defense in the prevent and Manning into desperation mode.

That touchdown pass came about 10 minutes after Schaub was leveled by Joe Mays, which resulted in Denver's second consecutive roughing-the-passer penalty and, eventually, a Texans field goal for a 24-11 lead. Schaub came out for a play and had a big, bloody mark on his left ear.

"I felt fine," Schaub said. "I just lost a piece of my ear. I was bleeding and my helmet came off. So, I had to come out for a play, but I was fine."

Manning had his ups and downs ? making some throws to prove the arm strength is certainly there, but also coming up short on a couple of those 18-yard out patterns that are as routine for NFL quarterbacks as making the bed.

His best downfield throw was the 38-yard touchdown to Brandon Stokley that pulled the Broncos within 31-18 with 9:49 left. His second score was a 6-yard touchdown that ricocheted into Joel Dreessen's hands with 3 minutes left.

There were no interceptions, but that's not to say Houston didn't have its way with the 36-year-old quarterback, who came into the game with 42 career touchdowns against the team he started beating when it was in its expansion season, back in 2002.

Manning's biggest headache in this one was second-year defensive end J.J. Watt, who finished with 2 1/2 sacks and forced a holding call in the third quarter that nullified a 36-yard gain.

"I don't see those numbers of defensive linemen as much. You are looking downfield," Manning said. "I'm probably the wrong guy to ask how he played."

Arian Foster finished with 105 yards on 25 carries for Houston. The Texans converted on four third downs and went 97 yards to take a 14-5 lead when Schaub hit Foster, being covered by defensive lineman Kevin Vickerson, for a 3-yard score that Foster celebrated by blowing kisses to the crowd.

NOTES: DE Elvis Dumervil got his first sack of the season on Denver's first defensive play, a 6-yard loss for the Broncos first safety since 2007. ...
