Jamie Dupree's Washington Insider: The Presidential campaign schedule

There are ten 'swing states' at this point in the race for the White House - eleven if you want to include Pennsylvania - but a glance at the schedules for President Obama and Republican Mitt Romney may help us eliminate a few of those states.

For example, the President has not been to North Carolina since the Democratic convention ended in early September, and signs are the GOP is heading for victory in the Tar Heel State - there have been no plans for the President to stop in North Carolina this week.

Also not on the itinerary for either candidate has been Michigan, where the President has a seemingly solid 4-5 point lead over Romney; if Republicans thought they had a chance to turn things around in Michigan, they would have their candidate make some stops in the state, and would spend some ad money there.

The schedule doesn't show any Romney visits or ad money from the campaign. Advantage Obama.

What about Pennsylvania? Republicans have started to move resources into Pennsylvnaia to see if the GOP can spin a late election upset - so far though, there isn't a stop planned by Romney in the Keystone State, or any advertising buys.

If Romney doesn't campaign there, a victory seems unlikely. If Romney doesn't buy some ad time there, it's hard to see how he jumps late in the polls in the Keystone State.

Both campaigns are spending time this week in Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, Florida and Virginia - those are true battlegrounds.

The President will be in New Hampshire on Saturday, which means the Democratic High Command must be a bit worried about the state of the race there.

Not included ?yet is Wisconsin, where the President enjoys a narrow lead in the polls; that is Paul Ryan's home state, so one would think he will get in some more campaign time there - whether Romney shows up is unclear.

Romney's path to victory seems to include just one basic option - win in Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, and then hope to add in Ohio and Colorado.

But if Romney cannot win Ohio, then he will need something like Wisconsin.

There isn't much time left, but there aren't many states in play either.

Why Apple priced the iPad Mini at $329

17 hrs.

If Apple had popped a $249 iPad Mini, the thing would have swept down from Mount Cupertino and set fire to every competitor with its fiery breath. If Apple had gone with a $299 iPad Mini, the devastation would still have been gnarly. At $329, the iPad Mini will have no shortage of buyers, but Apple leaves open an argument for a $199 non-Apple tablet. So why did Apple price it so high?

For starters, Apple is about profit. In the computer, phone and tablet businesses, Apple's competitors whittle away their pricing until they're making little or no money, because they believe they'll gain market share.?

Apple keeps prices competitive, but only to a point. There's no $499 Apple laptop, although plenty of Dells and HPs regularly start that low. Ditto for desktop computers, where Apple's idea of a deal is the $599 Mac Mini.

The iPad Mini is $329 because that's exactly what the highly paid bean counters at Apple calculated would be the highest price possible that would still sell. It may one day go down???in fact, I would say the price has to drop by Christmas 2013, if not sooner. But while you can always lower prices, it's a lot harder to raise them later on. Apple always starts at the top.

So while it was foolish for me to even think Apple would price competitively, I was surprised, because now there's a new conundrum: Do you buy an iPad Mini for $329, or go just $70 more?for a full-fledged iPad 2? This struck me as tight spacing, until I realized the bigger point: Apple doesn't think you will confuse a 7.9-inch tablet with a 9.7-inch tablet.

You know from the pictures that they're quite different in size, but holding them, you realize that their uses really are different. If you are in the market for something to use for sketching and text documents and spreadsheets, maybe even accompany it with a Bluetooth keyboard or whatever, then heck yes, you will pick the iPad 2 (or a newer?model).?

But if you just want something to read books on, and watch some shows and maybe surf the Web, then you are actually more INTERESTED in a smaller iPad, and won't think too hard about what $70 more gets you in terms of screen surface area.

That brings us back to square one, however: Apple is trying to convince us of separate uses for large and small iPads, but is trying to differentiate its product from the competition by price. Riddle me that, Avi Greengart, research director for consumer devices at Current Analysis:

"The price doesn't reduce the purchase case for some of the cheaper tablets," he told me when I saw him at the Apple event. "But this one stands above them." He smiled and added, "besides, compared to the Nexus 7, the design is so much nicer."

For people who aren't buying because of?design (and there are many), Greengart contends that the universe of apps available for the iPad ? 275,000 made expressly for that tablet, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook ? means that any tablet bearing the Apple logo is simply going to be more useful. "The iPad Mini is far more versatile" than its competitors, says Greengart. "It costs more but it's worth more."

For a final thought, I turned to my friends on Twitter, with the simple question: "Do you think the $329 iPad Mini is a) a steal b) priced just right or c) crazy expensive?"

From self-described "major Apple fanboy" @jasonwal, I got "a little high." Another instapundit, @weatherninja, said that "a $299.00 price tag would have been a better value," and that $329 means he may in fact go $70 more for the full-size iPad 2. @seanethompson seems to have been thinking along the same lines as me, calling the price "more expensive than most consumers would like, but in the ballpark given component costs and great user experience." Other responses?ranged from expensive to crazy expensive. "I'm curious on the profit margin," wrote @gevans. "I bet it's at least 40 percent."

Whatever the real percentage, I think @gevans may be onto something.?Apple products can be priced as high as the company wants, as long as people buy every product that gets made, and that hasn't seemed to be a problem of late. And as competitive as Apple is, a side effect of iPad-onomics is that there's room for more affordable options at the bottom of the pricing ladder. At least until that price drops to $299, or $249, and the villagers run for cover.

Pixels and Pills Shares Digital Pharma East Thrills | Digital Pharma

Special thanks to Michael Spitz (@SpitzStrategy) at Pixel and Pills for sharing his experiences onsite at the 6th Digital Pharma East.?

On behalf of the entire Pixels and Pills blog crew, we were thrilled to attend and honored to help capture some of the wonderful thinking and compelling innovation surrounding the 6th Annual Digital Pharma East conference in Philly this year.

With our booth set up right outside the Loew?s Philadelphia Hotel main presentation room on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, and up on the mezzanine throughout Thursday?s ?Mobile Day,? we shot more than 30 key digital pharma opinion leaders, including keynote speakers, pharma innovators, entrepreneurs and innovators, bloggers and visionaries, and many others who braved the camera and shared their wares.

Lisa Flaiz from Jannsen, discussing digital pharma potential with interviewer Spitz from Pixels and Pills

Lisa Flaiz from Jannsen, discussing digital pharma potential with interviewer Spitz from Pixels and Pills

What impressed us the most about the conference overall was the level of palpable excitement permeating the presentation halls, breakout tracks, master classes, interactive panels, and within the sponsor areas. Gone are the days when ?digital pharma? seemed a pipe dream or mere line item on the marketing budget, as an amazing confluence of technological and communications change sweeps the industry. Many of our interviewees pointed out how now is the time for digital health to demonstrate its true potential, as virtually every target audience including patients, caregivers, physicians, payers, hospital groups eagerly embrace the digital channel like never before.

In terms of conference content, the depth and breadth of the subject matter was timely and impressive. Only a few years ago the industry was struggling with how to handle unbranded disease education and the potential of a branded website experience. The iPad has since single-handedly redefined how healthcare audiences engage with digital content, forcing the hand of once-emerging technologies into mainstream pharma communications, and compelling marketers to embrace new models in mobile and even social networking.

With these unprecedented and often unexpected advances in mobility has blossomed the reality of ?the point of care everywhere,? bringing vast and nimble data resources into the hands of physicians and patients wherever they may be. Astute and innovative pharma and device manufacturers have acted on the opportunities, embracing touch screen interactive visual aids for sales reps, diagnostic and educational apps, and even flexible practice management tools for specialists, hospital groups, and other constituents hungry for seamless connectivity with their treatment providers.

In parallel to these technological changes (and often reinforced by them) are active and vibrant initiatives to evolve the legal and regulatory framework through which all branded forms of pharma and medical device communication must flow. Mark Bard of the Digital Health Coalition epitomizes this effort to bring industry, government, entrepreneurs, and even the ultimate end-user, the empowered patient, into the mix. As Mark discussed in his interview with us, the Coalition?s goal isn?t so much to draft prescriptive, granular guidance, as instead stimulate dialogue and bridge the gaps inhibiting the incredible potential engendered by the healthcare interactive technology landscape.

Mark Bard, Digital Health Coalition, explaining their goals with Spitz from Pixels and Pills

Mark Bard, Digital Health Coalition, explaining their goals with Spitz from Pixels and Pills

Perhaps most significantly, this year?s Digital Pharma East Conference reinforces the validity and vitality of the digital health conference circuit. Nowhere else can industry stakeholders, communications and technology experts, entrepreneurs and innovators, sponsors and bloggers openly meet, engage, share ideas, and brainstorm the future of pharma digital. Although the very tools discussed and featured enable and encourage communication like never before, there?s still no substitute for true face time, and sharing ideas and innovation live with hundreds of one?s peers in a setting dedicated solely to the exercise.

The interactive format of Digital Pharma East lent itself perfectly to this new sensibility, and fostered the opportunities for brainstorming the attendees expected. Robust Q&A followed presentations, while breakouts and master classes offered smaller and more specialized venues for deep dives into areas, all led by subject matter experts in their respective fields. We hope this ?Unconference? trend continues, giving stakeholders and pundits an even great opportunity to do what they do best, namely tear down walls and figure out ways to best connect with each other, their audiences, and with the pulse of the digital health revolution.

Best Mountains For Beginner Skiers

For many, a ski holiday requires more preparation than any other holiday taken throughout the year. Not only do you have to decide which country to visit, you then have to book flights and resorts, spend endless days trying on ski suits, rush around to buy last-minute ski accessories, and dither hours on deciding whether maybe, maybe, you need your own ski boots. Whilst the Holiday Discount Centre can help you with the booking preparations, take a look at the short guide below to help beginners choose the resort with the right slopes for their ability.

Frances Les Arcs ski resort arguably offers the biggest selection of slopes in France in terms of beginners, and all are located in close distance to the resorts main villages. Les Arcs also provides a free ski lift for beginners, and there is a chance to improve and practice on intermediate slopes for those fast learners.
Although the resort of Lech, in Austria, features the picturesque image of a classic ski resort, its smaller counterpart of Soll in the Tyrolean region offers the same charm without the hefty price tag. The slopes in the region are generally good for beginners, but the resorts biggest draw is the Learn to Ski life pass, which allows beginners to only pay for the slopes that match their skiing ability. This resort is a particularly good choice for those that have families looking for child-friendly entertainment.

For those looking for a bargain, then the Bulgarian resort of Bansko is a top choice for beginner skiers. A new ski lift was installed last year exclusively for beginner use, but the resort offers a wide array of slopes that will suit groups of mixed ability. This is Bulgarias busiest ski resort, so if visitors want to get away from the crowds for a day there is a mixture of historical sites, UNESCO-protected woodland, and small villages nearby to explore.

Soldeu is renowned for being one of Europes best beginner ski resorts, but for those that would rather avoid its messy nightlife and expensive ski passes, Arinsal is an equally good option. This resort has a selection of gentle nursery slopes for beginners, along with blue runs and intermediate slopes to practice on. If throughout your holiday you discover that maybe skiing isnt for you, there is a selection of activities like ski biking and dog sledding to keep you occupied.

When booking a holiday with this resort, it is also worth booking the First Time package with websites like Holiday Discount Centre to take advantage of the best offers for your ski holiday.

PFT: Pats beat Jets in OT; why was it so hard?

Jerry RichardsonAP

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney was fired Monday.

But the clock on his tenure really started ticking on Feb. 1, 2009, the day Panthers owner Jerry Richardson underwent heart transplant surgery.

Since then, Richardson has been a man aware of his mortality, and time to build was no longer the first priority for the 76-year-old owner.

How the Panthers are closer to winning now than they were last night is a mystery, because many of the moves Hurney made in recent years were strictly of the owner?s bidding.

From taking a hard line on franchised defensive end Julius Peppers to paying loyalty contracts to players such as Jake Delhomme to keep the 12-4 2008 division title team together, many of the moves Hurney was criticized most heavily for had Richardson?s thumbprints all over them. Likewise using the uncapped year in 2010 to clear the books for a post-lockout splurge on fan favorites such as DeAngelo Williams were moves dictated from upstairs.

The former sportswriter turned salary cap manager handled those moves, and built as best he could after the Panthers once-happy marriage with coach John Fox fell apart in 2009.

The current mess is as much about the coaching staff he hired not using the players he acquired properly, but Hurney was an easy fall guy for a team which had won nine games since the start of the 2009 season.

That overshadows a stable base of talent he?s assembled, including quarterback Cam Newton.

How they proceed at this point is a mystery, though it?s reasonable to assume team president Danny Morrison (the man Richardson hired to run the business when he fired his sons) will have a strong hand in the process.

Either way, the next football man will be on a short leash, because the man who brought football to the Carolinas believes he?s on borrowed time.

Every three minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Every 13 minutes, a woman dies from the disease, totaling nearly 40,000 women a year.

The seriousness of breast cancer can?t be understated. Yet according to the University of Florida Academic Health Center?s Breast Center, one of six Centers of Excellence in Florida, death rates from the disease are steadily decreasing. More than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors live in the U.S.

Increased awareness, improved treatments and early detection have been key, and UF is helping attack the disease head-on.

In the community, UF has raised awareness through events such as the Pink Pumpkin Fest held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In the lab, UF researchers launched more than 4,200 clinical research studies in the last four years with vital results.

For instance, studying how women?s genes and the environment affect cancer could lead to new drugs and treatments that prevent and kill the disease, says Lindy Brounley, UF Shands Cancer Center communications director.

Patients can extend long-term survival and cut down tumors through a UF-pioneered autoimmune response induced by radiotherapy. The process vaccinates women against their own cancer.

And UF researchers are leading the world?s first surveillance imaging trial to monitor breast cancer patients at a high risk of cancer spreading to their other organs, Brounley says.

See how else UF has been involved this year:

Father of bone marrow transplant is dead at 92

E. Donnall Thomas, a physician who pioneered the use of bone marrow transplants in leukemia patients and later won the 1990 Nobel Prize in medicine, has died in Seattle at age 92.

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center announced the death Saturday. A spokesman said the cause was heart disease.

Thomas' work is among the greatest success stories in the treatment of cancer. Bone marrow transplantation and its sister therapy, blood stem cell transplantation, have improved the survival rates for some blood cancers to upward of 90 percent from almost zero.

This year, about 60,000 transplants will be performed worldwide, according to the Hutchinson Center.

"Imagine coming up with an idea, making it a reality and touching that many lives," said Dr. Fred Appelbaum, Thomas' friend and the director of the center's Clinical Research Division.

Thomas took after his father and became a doctor after getting his medical degree from Harvard. In 1956, he performed the first human bone marrow transplant.

Thomas, along with a small team of fellow researchers, including his wife Dottie, pursued transplantations throughout the 1960s and 1970s despite skepticism from the medical establishment.

They sought to cure blood cancers by destroying a patient's diseased bone marrow with near-lethal doses of radiation and chemotherapy and then rescuing the patient by transplanting healthy marrow. The aim was to establish a functioning and cancer-free blood and immune system.

The procedure would go on to become the standard treatment for many sufferers of leukemia and lymphoma.

"He was brilliant, he was incredibly generous and he was quick to deflect praise from himself to the individuals around him," Appelbaum said.

"At the same time, while he was quiet and modest, he was stubborn," he added. "He believed in what he was doing and he was going to make it happen. It's hard to imagine today how hard it was to make this reality because it was against the prevailing medical wisdom."

Thomas joined the University of Washington faculty in 1963. In 1974, he became the first director of medical oncology at the Hutchinson Center. It is now one of the world's top cancer treatment and research institutions.

Thomas also edited the first two editions of the bone marrow transplantations reference book, "Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation," which would become a bible for the field.

"To the world, Don Thomas will forever be known as the father of bone marrow transplantation, but to his colleagues at Fred Hutch he will be remembered as a friend, colleague, mentor and pioneer," Larry Corey, president of the research center, said in a statement.

Thomas is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Obama, Romney cram foreign policy for last debate

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One day out from their last debate, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are cramming foreign policy and taking a rare break from swing-state campaigning.

Monday's face-off in Boca Raton, Fla., represents one of the last major opportunities for Obama and Romney to capture the attention of millions of voters ? especially that small but sought-after group of voters who haven't yet made up their minds.

Obama was holed up in Camp David in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he arrived Friday to prep for the debate, a 90-minute encounter focused on international affairs. With him at the presidential retreat were a band of top advisers including National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, campaign strategist David Axelrod and White House senior adviser David Plouffe.

Romney planned to spend the weekend in Florida, continuing intensive preparation that has consumed large amounts of his time in recent weeks.

Foreign policy has surfaced as a prominent issue in the waning weeks of the race, elevated by a deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and a restive situation in Syria. Although polls show voters continue to prioritize economic issues, both candidates are aggressively pitching themselves as more competent to be commander in chief.

In an unusually quiet day on the campaign trail, Romney running mate Paul Ryan was the only candidate to be out in front of voters. The Wisconsin congressman plans two events Sunday in Iowa, including one in Sioux City with country singer Mark Wills, plus an evening rally in Colorado.

Still, with a tight race closing in, neither Romney nor Obama can afford more than a few days away from the handful of states that will decide the winner.

Obama planned a whirlwind excursion starting after Monday's debate. Events Tuesday in Florida and Ohio will be followed by around-the-clock campaigning Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Then on to Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; and Cleveland on Thursday, when Obama will also return home to Chicago to vote early as part of the campaign's push for early and absentee voting.

In a sign that the candidates' time has become the most precious commodity, Obama's aides said he planned to sleep Wednesday night aboard Air Force One and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops.

Virtual Tailgate: Georgia at Kentucky Edition - A Sea Of Blue

Time for the weekly Virtual Tailgate -- Good virtual food and drink, and a little game talk.

Greetings and welcome, Kentucky Wildcats fans, to the Saturday Virtual Tailgate in honor of the Georgia Bulldogs, our opponent for tonight's game.

Tonight is homecoming for the Wildcats, and also Dermotti Dawson night in honor of the former Kentucky Wildcat, Pittsburgh Steeler, and newly-minted Professional Football Hall of Famer.

So let's get ourselves a cocktail, sit back and get ready for the game. Tonight's cocktail will be:

Peach Cobbler (via purdman1)

Georgia peach cobbler a la mode. A classic finish to a classic Southern meal

Time to talk some football. Once again, as it has all season, the Wildcats find themselves in a very tough spot. Georgia is a much better team, and they are rested to boot, coming off a bye week. Not only that, they are still smarting from the last game they played, a beat-down by the South Carolina Gamecocks. They may well look to take out their frustrations on Kentucky.

The one advantage, if you can call it that, that Kentucky has is that Georgia will be looking past them to the Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Jacksonville, their annual tilt against their hated foe, the Florida Gators. That will give Kentucky an opportunity to get a few punches in, and who knows, maybe Georgia will panic. I wouldn't count on it, though.

Georgia, with their running game, can simply grind Kentucky's defense into the turf of Commonwealth Stadium. Hopefully, they won't be as efficient in Kentucky as the Arkansas Razorbacks were in Fayetteville, or we could be looking at another embarrassing beat-down. Personally, I am looking at best for a "moral victory" here, keeping the final score within two touchdowns. Sadly, if UK team we have seen lately shows up again, that seems like a vain hope at best.

Word is that we'll be seeing more of Morgan Newton this game. I know that will frighten most of you, but frankly, I don't think it makes that much difference. Jalen Whitlow is talented, but he struggled mightily in the last couple of games, and unless he finds his confidence, it really doesn't matter all that much. On the better news side, Patrick Towles is on the mend, and may be ready for the next game. He didn't practice this week, but very well may next week.

That's what I have. Enjoy the virtual meal, and the open game thread will be up about 15 minutes prior to the game, as usual.

Go, 'Cats!

Missing link between mental health disorders and chronic diseases in Iraq war refugees

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? Wayne State University School of Medicine researchers may have discovered why people exposed to war are at increased risk to develop chronic problems like heart disease years later. And the culprit that links the two is surprising.

Beginning in the mid-2000s, WSU researchers interviewed a random sample of 145 American immigrants who left Iraq before the 1991 Gulf War, and 205 who fled Iraq after the Gulf War began. All were residing in metropolitan Detroit at the time of the study. Study subjects were asked about socio-demographics, pre-migration trauma, how they rated their current health, physician-diagnosed and physician-treated obstructive sleep apnea, somatic disorders and psychosomatic disorders. Those who left Iraq after the war began and suffered from mental disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, and self-rated their physical health as worse than their actual health, were 43 times more likely than pre-Gulf War immigrants to report obstructive sleep apnea (30.2 percent versus 0.7 percent) and later develop major chronic health issues such as cardiovascular disease.

"I was surprised, but we had a specific theory we wanted to test. Changes in the stress system would contribute to sleep apnea. What happens? Maybe it's the stress that leads to this fractured sleep," said Bengt Arnetz, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., School of Medicine professor of occupational and environmental health, deputy director of the Institute of Environmental Health Sciences at Wayne State, and the study's principal investigator and first author. "No one had explored this possible link before, although basic research suggests it as plausible."

The results are featured in the October 2012 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine, the peer-reviewed journal of the American Psychosomatic Society.

According to the article, "Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Health in Immigrants," obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles supporting the soft palate at the back of the throat relax, but less is known about the reasons behind this neuromuscular malfunctioning.

"It's a known fact that the more exposure to violence you have, the more likely you are to report PTSD and depression, and the worse your self-rated health is, the more likely your actual health will suffer in five to 10 years," Arnetz said.

Hikmet Jamil, M.D., Ph.D., professor of occupational and environmental health in WSU's School of Medicine, and Thomas Templin, Ph.D., research professor in WSU's College of Nursing, also contributed to the article.

The obstructive sleep apnea and chronic disase link has been observed among many trauma-exposed populations, including refugees, Arnetz said.

"Iraqis were exposed to harsh conditions during the entirety of Saddam Hussein's more than 20 years of reign. However, trauma and environmental exposures increased measurably and dramatically after the initiation of the 1991 Gulf War," the article states.

The study can now be used as a model for other populations, including U.S. soldiers returning home from battle.

The multidisciplinary study brought together mental health research, sleep research and chronic disease research, Arnetz said.

He and Jamil were partially supported by the National Institute of Mental Health of the National Institutes of Health (award number R01MH085793).

To further test their ideas, the researchers plan to apply for funding from the National Institutes of Health to collaborate with Safwan Badr, M.D., professor and chief of the School of Medicine's Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Thomas Roth, Ph.D., director of the Henry Ford Sleep Disorders and Research Center.

Snoring can trigger heart attack, doctor warns | P.M. NEWS Nigeria

Published on October 12, 2012 by pmnews ????? No Comments

Watch that snoring habit!

People who snore have greater chances of developing hypertension, heart attack and stroke, Dr Samuel Oladapo, a medical doctor at Ikeja General Hospital, Lagos, said.

Oladapo in an interview in Lagos said that those who snored loudly might end up acquiring Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) that might lead to heart diseases.

The Wikipedia free encyclopaedia defines snoring as the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping.

?In some cases, the sound may be soft, but in others, it can be loud and unpleasant,? the encyclopaedia says.

Oladapo also said, ?Snoring is a sound made in the upper airway of the throat during sleep.

?It is a sign that the airway is being partially blocked and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and is close to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

?Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the tissue in the back of the throat collapses to block the entire airway, which keeps air from getting in to the lungs.

? It occurs because the muscles inside the throat relax as you sleep. Gravity then causes the tongue to fall back and block the airway.?

Oladapo said, ?When sleep apnea occurs, the oxygen level in the body reduces which will cause the heart to pump more blood.

?By doing so, the heart will get strained and this may lead to serious heart conditions.

?The implication is that the person will not be able to sleep well, and even after hours of sleep, he will still feel exhausted.

?This will of course lead to stress related illnesses including: hypertension, heart attack and stroke. ?

He said that there were various ways of correcting and adjusting sleeping posture to make the throat and airways less prone to getting obstructed.

? Pillows can also help to adjust the position of the head and the throat to minimise the probability of obstruction and thus prevent snoring.

?People that snore excessively should reduce fat in the body and also adjust their lifestyle through exercise and diet,? he said.

Syria rebels capture air defense base, fight to hold highway

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels captured an air defense base east of Aleppo on Friday as government forces battled insurgents on several fronts across the country, activists said.

Clashes were also taking place at a military barracks close to Maarat al-Nuaman, a town on the main highway to the northwestern city of Aleppo which was seized by rebel forces earlier this week, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The pro-opposition Observatory gave a death toll for Thursday of more than 260 people, including civilians and combatants on both sides in violence in the capital and the north, west and east.

It said 92 soldiers were killed on Thursday, which would be one of the highest daily casualty counts on the government side since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out in March 2011.

The official SANA news agency also reported fighting nationwide and said dozens of rebels, which it called "mercenary terrorists", had been killed.

The reports could not be independently verified but they indicate a rapidly intensifying conflict, with the death tolls of the past several weeks far exceeding previous months.

Although international attention has focused on the Turkish border in the past week, Aleppo and the city of Homs - north of Damascus and near the border with Lebanon - are being fought over and clashes take place almost daily in the suburbs of the capital Damascus as well as in the countryside.

Turkey scrambled two fighter planes to the border with Syria on Friday after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin.

The Observatory said the air defense base seized by the rebels was located in al-Tana village by the Koris military airport on the road east from Aleppo to al-Raqqa.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, has been contested since July. The rebel capture of Maarat al-Nuaman cut the highway between Aleppo and Homs, the main route for the government to resupply and reinforce the northern city.

SANA said government forces were mounting operations to clear Aleppo's Karm al-Jabal area of rebels on Friday.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in the conflict which started out as a popular uprising against four decades of Assad family rule then descended into civil war. The armed forces have relied heavily on air power and artillery to hold back the rebels.

Fighting has also spilled over the borders into Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, raising concern that the fighting could spread across the region, now home to 340,000 Syrian refugees.

Biden, the anti-Obama, brings exasperation to debate with Ryan

On Thursday night, vice president Joe Biden and congressman Paul Ryan sat at a semi-circular piece of corporate office furniture to debate various aspects of foreign and domestic policy.?With moderator Martha Raddatz at the helm, the 90-minute conversation between the two contenders began fairly civilly, and grew increasingly snippy.

Those hoping for a few true wildman outbursts or gaffes from the easily lampooned Biden were disappointed. The vice president, however, grinning hugely, shaking his head and even giggling during some of his opponent's answers, did seem exasperated with the much younger congressman for most of the debate.

Answering the moderator's first question, about the recent terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, Biden, a former chairperson of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, promised that the Obama administration would "find and bring justice to the men" responsible for the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and the three other Americans killed during the attack.

Ryan came back with the claim that the president's foreign policy is "making us less safe."

Shortly after, Biden had his first bona fide 'Biden moment': "With all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey," he said. (Moments later "malarkey" and "malarky" were trending on Twitter.)

As the candidates segued to domestic issues, Biden went after the Romney/Ryan ticket for being on the side of fat cats. "They continue to put the interest of millionaires and billionaires ... ahead of the military and middle class," Biden said.

In response?and attempting to defend Romney's controversial 47 percent remark?Ryan said (to laughter), "I think the vice president knows, sometimes the words don't always come out of your mouth the way you want."

"But I always say what I mean," Biden retorted with a grin.

The vice president did seem to say what he meant for much of the debate, even looking straight at the camera and addressing viewers directly.

On Medicare, Biden asked: "Any senior out there ask yourself: Do you have more benefits today?" It was a daytime television commercial moment fit for a consummate salesman: there should have been an 800 number for people to dial so Biden could chat with them.

Raddatz also questioned the candidates about their tickets' respective tax plans. Biden pointed his pointer finger at Raddatz and proclaimed for the second time during the debate that Romney and Ryan were intending "to [hold] the middle class hostage."

Ryan, sounding like a wonky accountant running numbers and bobbing his head side to side a bit like a turtle, responded that there aren't enough rich people to pay for the Obama Administration's spending. Then, taking a cue from Biden, he addressed the camera directly: "Watch out middle class, the tax bill is coming to you."

(At 9:53, "Joe Biden's teeth" was also trending on Twitter.)

Ryan also claimed that bipartisanship could make his ticket's vague proposed tax plan work.

"Different than this administration, we actually want to have big, bipartisan agreements," Ryan said, suggesting cooperation could push through a 20 percent tax cut across the board for Americans. "Look at what Tip O'Neil and Ronald Reagan did. They worked out of a framework."

"The only way you can find $5 trillion in deductions is to cut deductions for the middle class," Biden said. Otherwise, it's "not mathematically possible."

"It is mathematically possible," Ryan responded. "Jack Kennedy lowered taxes and raised revenue."

This provoked the only line that could possibly count as the debate's only real zinger.

"Oh, now you're Jack Kennedy," Biden said, evoking visions of the 1988 vice-presidential debate between Lloyd Bentsen and Dan Quayle. ("Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine," Bentsen had said. "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy.")

During that same exchange, the biggest zinger of the night was almost Raddatz's. She asked Ryan directly for details on the tax cuts: "Do you actually have the specifics, or are you still working on it?"

Closing out, Raddatz moved back to foreign policy, covering Afghanistan, and then asked the two Catholic candidates how their faith impacts their views on abortion.

Then, with the debate having grown downright testy, Raddatz said, "Let me calm down things here just for a minute," and asked her last question: "If you were elected, what would you both give to this country as a man, and human being, that no one else could?"

Ryan suggested his capacity to solve problems, but then rattled off statistics about jobs and the economy instead of sticking with the question.

Biden, casual, went broad: "Let me tell ya," he said. "My record stands for itself. Whatever I say, I do. I treat Main Street and Wall Street the same. You grow this country from the middle out, not the top down."

In his closing statement, Biden went again for the emotional connection to viewers that he reached for much of the evening. "You probably detected my frustration with [Ryan and Romney's] attitude toward the American people," he said. "All [the American people] are looking for is an even shot. The president and I are not going to rest until they have a clear shot and peace of mind and can say to their family, 'It's gonna be ok.'"

Ryan, in closing, looked like he was delivering a PSA: "Wouldn't it be nice to have a job creator in the White House?" he asked. "The choice is clear, and the choice rests with you, and we ask you for your vote."

ESPN college football guru Beano Cook dead at 81

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Beano Cook, the college football commentator with an encyclopedic knowledge of the sport he dearly loved, has died.

The 81-year-old Boston native had worked for ESPN since 1986 and was the sports information director at his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh, from 1956 to 1966. The school announced Thursday that Cook had died in his sleep.

"He was one of a kind," ESPN executive chairman George Bodenheimer said. "There never was and never will be another Beano. His combination of humor, passion, love of college football and his engaging personality left an indelible mark on the sport and touched anyone who knew him."

Born Carroll H. Cook, he grew up in Pittsburgh before graduating from the university in 1954, and was known for his love of the college game and, in particular, championing the cause of northeastern teams including Penn State and Pitt before either school was a nationally known power.

"Beano Cook was an American original. His passion, depth and breadth of knowledge, and humor were unique," ESPN host Chris Fowler said. "He was an invaluable early mentor to me and friend. His imprint can still be seen on GameDay each week."

Cook, like many in the business, fell in love with simply being around the competition. With a career that took him so many places, it was hard not to get wrapped up in it.

"Getting to know the athletes really provided me with my fondest memories," Cook once said. "That was the most fun."

He said his favorites from his time working at Pitt were Mike Ditka, who went on to become a Pro Football Hall of Famer, and basketball star Don Hennon.

His wealth of knowledge about college football and memory for details made him an irresistible storyteller, as well a passionate pundit.

He wasn't always right, but he wasn't afraid to make bold pronouncements, such as when he predicted Notre Dame freshman quarterback Ron Powlus would win at least two Heisman trophies. Powlus never even won one, but Cook's prediction made him famous forever.

In recent years he was a frequent contributor on ESPN Radio and did a weekly podcast with ESPN college football writer Ivan Maisel.

He was an unapologetic defender of college football, while recognizing its warts, and wasn't shy about touting its superiority to the pro game.

"On Sundays they play for money," he once said. "On Saturdays they play for passion, for the love of the game. I think that's why it's our greatest sport."

Cook was ABC Sports' press director for the NCAA after leaving the SID job at Pitt, and later worked in as a writer or media representative for the St. Petersburg Times, Miami Dolphins, the Mutual Radio Network, and CBS before joining ESPN.

"Beano was a unique human being and he was college football at ESPN. I am indebted to him. Beano was a tremendous help at the start of my television career and I would not be where I am today without him," ESPN analyst Lee Corso said. "I am forever grateful to Beano and the time we spent behind the GameDay desk."

Cook received his distinctive nickname as a youth, when his family moved from Boston to Pittsburgh. A neighbor of the Cook family said, "Oh, from Boston, like the beans" and tabbed the 7-year-old "Beano."

Cook is fondly remembered at Pitt, where the media room in the Petersen Events Center is named after him.

"Beano left a legacy never to be matched. Not matched in accomplishment, wit or loyalty," Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said. "Like so many others, it has been my privilege to be the beneficiary of Beano's counsel and friendship. He loved the University of Pittsburgh and his name is synonymous with all good things at Pitt.

"We all feel a tremendous void in our lives today."

Many in and around college football concurred on Thursday.

"It's a sad day for college football," Penn State coach Bill O'Brien said. "Especially in the state of Pennsylvania, where he was an icon."

Carrefour sales rise 2.1 percent to $29 billion - WAFB 9 News Baton ...

PARIS (AP) - Big box retailer Carrefour SA says revenue was up modestly in third quarter, driven by strong sales in its convenience stores and booming regions like Asia and Latin America.

The world's second-largest retailer after Wal-Mart said Thursday that sales rose 2.1 percent to ?22.6 billion ($29 billion) in the July to September quarter.

Recessions in Spain and Italy weighed on the company's performance in Europe, where sales slipped 2.2 percent.

But Asia and Latin America picked up the slack, growing 12.3 percent and 5.2 percent respectively.

Carrefour recently appointed a new CEO who is trying to turn around the company, particularly its core hypermarket business. Sales at hypermarkets are down 2.4 percent so far this year. In contrast, its smaller stores have grown 6.6 percent.
