Watch that snoring habit!

People who snore have greater chances of developing hypertension, heart attack and stroke, Dr Samuel Oladapo, a medical doctor at Ikeja General Hospital, Lagos, said.

Oladapo in an interview in Lagos said that those who snored loudly might end up acquiring Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) that might lead to heart diseases.

The Wikipedia free encyclopaedia defines snoring as the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping.

?In some cases, the sound may be soft, but in others, it can be loud and unpleasant,? the encyclopaedia says.

Oladapo also said, ?Snoring is a sound made in the upper airway of the throat during sleep.

?It is a sign that the airway is being partially blocked and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and is close to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

?Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the tissue in the back of the throat collapses to block the entire airway, which keeps air from getting in to the lungs.

? It occurs because the muscles inside the throat relax as you sleep. Gravity then causes the tongue to fall back and block the airway.?

Oladapo said, ?When sleep apnea occurs, the oxygen level in the body reduces which will cause the heart to pump more blood.

?By doing so, the heart will get strained and this may lead to serious heart conditions.

?The implication is that the person will not be able to sleep well, and even after hours of sleep, he will still feel exhausted.

?This will of course lead to stress related illnesses including: hypertension, heart attack and stroke. ?

He said that there were various ways of correcting and adjusting sleeping posture to make the throat and airways less prone to getting obstructed.

? Pillows can also help to adjust the position of the head and the throat to minimise the probability of obstruction and thus prevent snoring.

?People that snore excessively should reduce fat in the body and also adjust their lifestyle through exercise and diet,? he said.
