Commentary: Rubio's Great Response to Obama's Tax Obsession

Yahoo News asked readers to react to Sen. Marco Rubio's Republican response on Tuesday night. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | Sen. Marco Rubio's response to President Obama's State of the Union address was not a point-for-point rebuttal. However, he highlighted that President Obama has an "obsession with raising taxes." He was referring to Obama's constant penchant for myriad new programs to solve the nation's problems. Instead of having policies toward bigger government programs, Rubio asserted that "the choice isn't just between big government or big business." This was likely a reference to Obama's comment that corporate profits were at all-time high.

Having been in government service as military, a contractor and in civil service for 31 years, I have seen excess spending and redundant programs. Rubio's assertion that the government needs to be more efficient and accountable resonates loudly with me. The president's idea of expanded government programs to solve the many issues our nation faces is fraught with error.

Rubio further illustrated this when he spoke of expanding the economy through the support of the energy industry to drill on federal lands. While Obama called for climate change to be a priority, Rubio brought up the Solyndra clean energy failure. Rubio strongly advocated for reform in energy regulations to allow for drilling and exploration on federal lands.

Senator Rubio did a great job of answering the president's address. He highlighted the idea that the president still clings to the same tired strategies that didn't work in the first four years of his presidency. Smaller government and lower taxes will help this nation recover its economic grandeur.
